Answers to Five Commonly Asked Dental Questions

Answers to Five Commonly Asked Dental Questions

At our dental office, we hear many of the same questions from patients every day. Whether you’re visiting us from Middleburg, Aldie, Ashburn, Purcellville, Warrenton, Marshall, South Riding, Leesburg, Haymarket, or elsewhere in Loudoun County, it’s easy to feel unsure about what dental advice to trust.

Here are clear, practical answers to five of the most common questions we’re asked.

1. Are Dental X-rays Safe?

Yes, dental X-rays are very safe. Modern digital X-rays use extremely low radiation exposure, comparable to what you’d receive during a cross-country flight. Dentists are careful to limit exposure and only take X-rays when needed for your health.

X-rays are a vital part of dental exams because they help detect cavities between teeth and identify problems like abscesses, bone loss, or tumors before they cause pain or become difficult to treat. The frequency of your X-rays should be based on factors such as your cavity history and overall oral health,  something your dentist will determine with you. Early detection through X-rays helps ensure small problems stay manageable and preserves your teeth long term.

2. Do I Really Need to Floss?

Flossing is important because it removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth, places a toothbrush can’t reach. However, floss isn’t your only option if you struggle with it.

Electric or sonic toothbrushes clean better than manual ones, and tools like water flossers and small interdental brushes (proxy brushes) can also help maintain healthy gums. Ask your dentist or hygienist which combination of tools suits your needs best.

3. What Is the Best Toothpaste?

With so many options on store shelves, choosing toothpaste can be confusing. The best toothpaste isn’t necessarily the fanciest or the most expensive, it’s the one that effectively prevents cavities without irritating your gums or being too abrasive.

Most patients do well with a simple fluoride paste that carries the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. Avoid whitening toothpastes, which can wear down enamel and cause sensitivity, as well as tartar-control or gel formulas if your gums are easily irritated. In most cases, a plain fluoride paste is both effective and affordable.

4. When Should My Child First Go to the Dentist?

Your child should visit the dentist when their first baby teeth begin to appear. Early visits help establish good oral hygiene habits and allow parents to ask questions about brushing, pacifiers, diet, and bottle use.

The first appointment is usually a gentle introduction, a chance for your child to meet the dental team, see the office, and learn that dental visits are comfortable and routine. Building familiarity early can help prevent fear and encourage lifelong trust in dental care.

5. Should I Whiten My Teeth?

Whitening is a safe and effective way to remove internal stains and brighten your smile. Professional whitening treatments use peroxide-based gels that can be applied in the office (stronger formula) or at home (milder formula). You can whiten anytime you like, just pause if your teeth become sensitive.

Whitening isn’t recommended during pregnancy, but otherwise, it’s a simple, reliable way to refresh your smile and boost confidence.
